Reasons for Marriage According to the Bible

Marriage is God’s idea and not man’s. God addressed man’s need for a companion by making a woman. So if there are problems in marriage, it is advisable to go to God for answers. Answers to marital problems are found in the Holy Scriptures.

Why marriage?
Here we shall look at four reasons for marriage according to scripture.

1) Marriage solves the problem of loneliness

Genesis 2:18 says, “Later, the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a companion that is a suitable match for him."
God realized that it was not good for man to be alone. So He decided to make him a helpmeet or companion suitable for him. We note that the companion must be a suitable one. Not everyone is suitable for you. So the must be exercised properly. But if there was a mistake, it can be corrected with the help of God. He grants grace.
Man needed companionship. So friendship to a man is the greatest thing a woman can give to a man. God saw the need for companionship and He could not lie about it. One of the reasons why some men end up in wrong groups and involved in things like alcohol and drugs is loneliness. Good women are life changers. So if you are a woman, it is important that you take this role seriously. By so doing, your man will ever be grateful to you. A man should not be lonely whilst a woman is present. That would mean something is lacking.

2) To be a helpmeet

The same scripture Genesis 2:18 speaks of being a helpmeet or companion.
Genesis 2:18 says, “Later, the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make for him a companion that is a suitable match for him." According to Lana Packer cited in Heward-Mills, (2005:15) there are different ways a woman can help the man. These include prayer, sex, providing food, counsel, encouragement, and comfort. Furthermore, the woman can further help by showing hospitality, performing housekeeping duties, helping financially, socially, etc.

Harley, (2013:21-22) asserts that man and woman are different and their differences in perspective complement each other to create a more complete understanding of the problems we all face in life. This means their joint agreement is the best resolution to their conflicts. So differences in the way a man and woman think makes them perfect partners in life.
The sooner a man and woman understand these differences and acknowledging them the better. This can help reduce the destructive agreements that lead to divorce.

3) Avoiding fornication

1Co 7:1 Now about what you asked: "Is it advisable for a man not to marry?"
1Co 7:2 Because sexual immorality is so rampant, every man should have his own wife, and every woman should have her own husband.

The persecution of believers disturbed a good environment for proper marriage relationships, especially new ones. That is why the advice was given to a man, not to touch a woman. However, to avoid fornication a man was to have his own wife and a wife to have her own husband.
So it is advisable for matured young people to get married. This will avoid fornication, which is not acceptable to God. The other thing, fornication results in deep hurts and wounds. Marriage can avoid such.

4) Procreation

Genesis 1:26-28 reads as follows:
“Then God said, "Let us make mankind in our image, to be like us. Let them be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, the livestock, everything that crawls on the earth, and over the earth itself!"
So God created mankind in his own image; in his own image God created them; he created them male and female.
God blessed these humans by saying to them, "Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it! Be masters over the fish in the ocean, the birds that fly, and every living thing that crawls on the earth!"

Having children outside the perimeters of marriage makes them to be found lacking. Children are a blessing from God the Creator. It is worth mentioning however, that a marriage is good even if there are not children. It is not children who validate a marriage. Well, some customs do not look at marriage as a good one if there are no children. But that is not God’s standard and that is a man-made philosophy.

The presence of children ensures that the human race continues on earth. But it is important to take good care of them. Give them love, meet their basic needs and a conducive environment for their growth and development.

The above reasons for marriage are biblical and are not necessarily conclusive. Let us ensure that our marriages fulfill these reasons or expectations in order to enjoy life time marriages. Problems and conflicts can be better resolved if we keep these reasons in mind. Where there are problems already, they can be resolved.

Why You Need to Hear the Voice of God- Salvation as the starting point

The word “salvation” embraces all the acts whereby God intervenes to rescue mankind from spiritual and any other physical or psychological destruction. Salvation comprises of deliverance, safety, preservation, healing, and soundness. It also includes whatever it takes to get us free and liberated from any kind of bondage. So you can note that if the above elements can be realized in our lives, salvation can be a practical reality in our lives. That was God’s intention from the beginning of creation. After the fall, God introduced a plan to restore human beings into their original position.

So in order to be led by the Holy Spirit, there must be a born-again experience. Experiencing the life God intended for us on earth starts with accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior of your life. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life.”(John 3:16).

Originally, God created perfect human beings. Those were Adam and Eve. He put His nature in man. God wanted man to resemble Him. This is revealed in the book of Genesis.
Gen 1:27 And God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Gen 1:28 And God blessed them: and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the heavens, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

You were created to act like God, to rule the earth and have dominion. However, man was tempted by the devil. He yielded to Satan and thus lost the image of God. He lost authority to rule the earth. By so doing, Man handed his rule over the earth over to Satan when he yielded to sin.
The good news? God made a great plan to redeem man. That is why Jesus Christ came to the earth. He defeated Satan by dying on the Cross and resurrecting on the third day. By so doing, He restored man to his original position. But for that to happen, you have to first confess Jesus as Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead.

You can initiate your salvation according to Romans 10:8-10.
Rom 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach:
Rom 10:9 because if thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved:
Rom 10:10 for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. With this experience, one is eligible to be baptized and led by the Holy Spirit.

Why You Need to Hear the Voice of God- Part 1

Human beings are special in the eyes of God. They are not like animals. A human being was created in the image and likeness of God. So that means he is like Him. He is linked to God for his survival and proper functioning on earth.
"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.[(Genesis 1:26-27) (KJV)]
.

This means mankind needs God in order to live according to the purpose for which he was created. Therefore, man must hear and communicate with God. He was not created to be independent. He was created to have fellowship with Him.

In order to have communication with God, this must be in God's terms. God speaks. However, due to the interference of Satan, man fell into sin. He then inherited the nature of the devil. He died spiritually. God had to work on a plan to restore man back to Himself. The fellowship got spoiled. As time went by, man lost hearing from God.

God's plan finally worked out after Jesus Christ had come to the earth. Jesus took man's place. He died for him. Then it became possible for man's sin to be removed. Therefore, anyone who comes and accepts Jesus Christ as Lord, he is forgiven of his sin. Fellowship with God is restored.

Jesus then left the earth and went back to heaven where God is seated. However, He promised another Comforter, the Holy Spirit to come and take His place on earth. John 16:13-15, "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth: for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak: and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come.
He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you.
All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you."(American Standard Version).

The Holy Spirit came into the earth and filled believers. Receiving Him is called baptism in the Holy Spirit. He came to fulfill all that Jesus promised. He leads and guides the believers. He has a voice through which He guides believers. This gift from heaven is available to anyone who believes that Jesus Christ is Lord.
